Seroprevalence of Caprine Brucellosis in Doba district, West Hararghe Zone, East Ethiopia
Main Article Content
Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the sero-prevalence and distribution of brucellosis and to identify the potential predisposing factors associated with brucellosis occurrence in Doba district West Hararghe zone of Oromia Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia. Simple random sampling method was employed to select 384 goats in four rural kebeles from Doba district. Modified Rose Bengal plate test (mRBPT) and complement fixation test (CFT) were used as screening and confirmatory serological tests, respectively. The results revealed that 10 (2.6%) and 7 (1.83%) goats were seropositive for caprine brucellosis by mRBPT and CFT, respectively. The risk factors considered (age, sex, and body condition) were not associated with caprine brucellosis infection. Nevertheless, relatively higher magnitude of prevalence was recorded in adult, female, and poor body condition goats. The present study established the presence of caprine brucellosis in the study areas. Therefore, careful segregation and elimination of positive reactor animals would help to control further distribution of the disease. Moreover, exhaustive investigation is suggested to identify the determinant risk factors of caprine brucellosis.
